Review: evenflo Advanced+ Bottle and Triple-Flo Tumbler

photo 1

I was sent a couple of products from the fine folks at evenflo Feeding to try out with the girls. I took them for a test-drive, so to speak. The first of the products we tested out was the Advanced+ baby bottle. The other was their new Triple-Flo tumbler. I’ll start with the Advanced+ bottle.

Uncomfortable Positions In Parenting

You want me to be real? As a parent, you find yourself in the most uncomfortable positions known to man. Seriously, man, I’m not kidding. From the moment you bring your screaming bundle of joy home from the hospital for the first time, you need to condition your body to get into some insane positions–all for the comforting of your little ones. Contorting my body is a daily occurrence ’round these parts. It honestly doesn’t matter what it is that I’m doing, my body is going to have contort in ways that I didn’t know were possible.

Like U2 Said: Walk On

One year. One entire year has come and gone since we welcomed Maddie into the world. On that day, she was just a little bundle of cries and cutes. Now? She’s a powerhouse of all the cuteness, all the laughs, and all things awesome. After all, she is the daughter of me and Sarah, so… But in all seriousness, it has been one hell of a year with Maddie at our side. Continue reading

We Don’t Say That – It’s A Bad Word

bad wordKids pick up on every single little thing you say. Everyone knows that. Whether that means they watch what they say in front of kids, well, that’s a different story. Actually, that’s a story I’ve written about before. When they do say words they shouldn’t, it’s important to teach them that the word is bad, wrong, something they shouldn’t say. Yeah, I mean, eventually they’ll say them, but hopefully that is years down the road.

Anytime Sophia says a word she knows she shouldn’t be saying, like dammit or shut up, she immediately knows what is going to come out of our mouths: “We don’t say that, it’s a bad word.” Sometimes, she’ll even preempt us and tell us we don’t say shut up, or we don’t say dammit. Hey, at least she knows she shouldn’t be saying them.

BUT, that has put me into this habit of saying “we don’t say that, it’s a bad word” anytime I hear the trigger words. Continue reading

Which is Best For You? Stay-at-Home Parent vs Working Parent

Sophia more than two years ago, while I was a stay-at-home dad

Sophia more than three years ago, while I was a stay-at-home dad.

Jan 14th, 2011: The day I lost my previous job.

February 24th, 2011: The day Sophia was born. Also the day I became a stay-at-home dad.

The topic of stay-at-home parenting can be a hot-button issue. I realize that. Frankly, I don’t understand why it’s really anybody else’s business if you decide to stay at home and raise your kids or if you decide to work. I’ve seen this more between moms than between dads, but it can be downright brutal. Really, I just want discussion, respectful, of course, about the topic. Continue reading

Toon Town

Cartoons. When you’re a kid they are literally the best thing ever. When I was a kid I had to wait until Saturday morning cartoons came on to get my fix of my favorite shows. And I’ll tell you what, kiddos, being a kid in the 80s, we had some seriously awesome cartoons to watch. G.I. Joe? Hell yes. He-Man? Oh you didn’t know that was the greatest show on TV? Get out now. Transformers? For the win, my friends. FOR THE WIN. And, my personal favorite: M.A.S.K. Funny story about M.A.S.K., I have a scar on my face from the toy truck they made for series. Word to the wise: Never run across a rock driveway with a toy truck unless you wanna fall and face plant on said truck.

I know what you’re probably thinking: “Here he goes with a ‘BACK IN MY DAY…’ rant”. Nope. Not what I’m doing. Really, I just want to talk about the cartoons that I’m bombarded with in my house. There are many, MANY parents out there with strong feelings about a lot of the cartoons that pop up on our TVs these days. What’s funny is the transition that comes from when your kids first start watching cartoons and see shows on Sprout, like Caillou, aka the worst effing show on the planet, and then quicklyish move onto shows on Disney Junior. If you wanna read the greatest take ever on Caillou, head over to HowToBeADad to be enlightened.  Continue reading

Movers and Shakers

In two weeks, Maddie will turn one. I can’t believe it. I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone. I can’t believe we’ve survived life with two kids for almost a year. Looking back over the year, a lot has happened. Good and bad. But, that’s not really what this post is about. This post is about the tiny speed demon that is Maddie. It took her a while to get to crawling, but holy hell has that girl mastered it. She’s a mover. She’s a shaker. Pretty soon, she’ll be walking, running, and leaving us in her dust. Sorta like Sophia does now.

My Daughter Is Just Like Me As A Kid–And It’s Driving Me Nuts

When I was a kid, my mom used to say “I can’t wait until you have a kid and they are JUST LIKE YOU. Paybacks.” That’s a true story. You know what else is a true story? The fact that she got her wish. From the day Sophia started being mobile, she has been non-stop. I mean NON-STOP. Talking all the time? Check. Running around non-stop? Check. Never wanting to sleep? Double-check.
